Artist Information Statement
Created and printed in my Chatham, Mass studio, each image is numbered, identified and signed with a gold pen.
As a master gardener, most of the flowers shown have been grown in my gardens. I have always believed that flowers represent nature's perfection. These images provide perfectly tranquil settingsand an unusual warmth. When a flower is at its best, it is cut and brought into my studio where it is floated over a professional level digital scanner. Each flower is then scanned at up to 12000 pixels per inch. This method provides amazing clarity. Nature is quite untidy at this level of detail and requires that defects, dust, and pollen be removed. Doing so requires great care to maintain the integrity of the petals colors, veins and hues. The black backgrounds, my signature style, are created by literally erasing everything that will not be part of the final image, setting my digital eraser to absolute black. I then add and take light away to create the 3 dimensional sense, adjust the colors and intensities until I feel that I have captured nature's intent. Many ask, why the black backgrounds?, Using black to create the light is an early renaisance painting technique as seen in the great Italian masters.
Each is printed on high quality canvas, sealed with a UV sealant and stretched on kiln dried stretchers. Available sizes range from 8" by 8" to 50" by 70" or maybe requested to meet a partiuclar size specification. An Epson 9800 Printer, with the latest ultra chrome pigmented inks, is used. The UV sealant assures long life and easy care. The Images may also be ordered on fine art paper - both framed and unframed, and on decorative tiles and trivets.
Please feel free to ask any questions about my work.
